The Philadelphia Eagles will be hard at work throughout the next two weeks as they prepare for the 2025 NFL draft. The defending Super Bowl Champions will be on the clock eight times when they travel to Green Bay, WI next week, leaving time to tell if the Eagles can draft enough impact prospects to improve their odds of a title repeat next season.
While the NFL draft is often used to fill roster holes, it can also lead to rookies pushing returning veterans out of their current jobs. It wouldn't be surprising if the Eagles used this year's draft to replace a beloved playmaker who's likely on his way out of Philadelphia.
Eagles Can Cut TE Dallas Goedert After Drafting His Replacement
Veteran tight end Dallas Goedert is one player whose future with the Eagles is up in the air.
The 30-year-old pass-catcher is heading into the final year of his contract with a $11.7 million cap hit and zero money being guaranteed, according to OverTheCap. Throw in how he's missed 15 games across the last three seasons, and it's easy to see why the Eagles might be open to moving on — especially when a post-June 1 cut would create over $4 million in cap savings.
Even though it would sting to part ways with Goedert, it's an outcome the Eagles must consider. The Britton, SD native is struggling to stay on the gridiron, and staying healthy won't get any easier now that he's in his 30s. Philadelphia could look at his average of 4.4 missed games per season since 2020 and decide it's time to move on.
Goedert has racked up 349 catches for 4,085 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns in 93 regular-season outings with the Eagles, along with a 52-562-4 stat line in a dozen playoff appearances. Although replacing a player with that track record isn't always easy, a loaded 2025 TE draft class could make a potential divorce more digestible for Philly fans.
Top prospects like Penn State's Tyler Warren and Michigan's Colston Loveland likely won't be around when the Eagles make their first pick, but that doesn't mean they can't draft other high-potential tight ends. Miami's Elijah Aroyo and Oregon's Terrance Ferguson are both potential first-/second-round targets, whereas Mitchell Evans could be a Day 3 option after his breakout performance with Notre Dame in 2024.
Aside from Goedert, the Eagles' TE room already boasts Kylen Granson, Harrison Bryant, Grant Calcaterra, and Nick Muse. Adding a high-upside playmaker to the mix would give Philadelphia a group that's solid enough that a potential Goedert exit wouldn't hurt as much.
All good things end one day, and the Eagles will eventually need to decide on Goedert's future. With one of the most stacked TE draft classes on the horizon, there might not be a better time for Nick Sirianni & Co. to move on from No. 88.
