The Philadelphia Eagles will finish their preseason journey when they visit the New York Jets for Friday evening's exhibition finale. A win over the Jets would improve the Eagles' record to 2-1, giving them some extra momentum as the Super Bowl Champions look to win consecutive titles for the first time since winning back-to-back NFL Championships in 1948 and 1949.
As exciting as things currently are for Eagles fans, things have also been going well for some of Philadelphia's former players as of late — including an ex-quarterback who's reuniting with an old team.
Per source, the 49ers will be signing QB Nate Sudfeld, who had a tryout with them on Monday. Sudfeld, 31, spent the 2021 season in San Francisco and knows the offense.

According to The Athletic's Matt Barrows, the San Francisco 49ers are signing former Eagles QB Nate Sudfeld to an NFL contract following Monday's tryout. The ex-Indiana Hoosier previously spent the 2021 season with the 49ers and will likely compete with second-year passer Carter Bradley for the team's QB3 job behind Brock Purdy and Mac Jones.
Former Eagles QB Nate Sudfeld Signs with 49ers in Preseason Week 3
The 49ers will mark the latest stop on the veteran journeyman's NFL tour. Sudfeld's career began as a sixth-round pick by the then-Washington Redskins in 2016, but he only spent one year with the NFC East franchise before he was cut, allowing him to sign with the Eagles right before the 2017 season began.
Eagles fans didn't see much of Sudfeld until he was forced to replace an injured Nick Foles in a Week 16 showdown with the rival Dallas Cowboys. The Modesto, CA native ended the 6-0 loss by going 19-of-23 (82.6%) in the pocket for 134 passing yards without a touchdown or interception thrown.
Sudfeld didn't play any more meaningful snaps for the Eagles that season, but that likely didn't matter to him. After all, he ended up being a part of Philadelphia's Super Bowl LII-winning roster, which is something that even some of the most consistent Pro Bowl QBs don't accomplish. Sure, he didn't play a role in the championship game itself, but his name is in the history books, and no one can take that away.
Sudfeld's run with the Eagles ended on a controversial note. Former head coach Doug Pederson subbed the 6-foot-6 signal-caller in to replace Jalen Hurts in a Week 17 clash with Washington in 2020. Philadelphia rolled with Sudfeld despite only trailing by three points, and the QB's pair of turnovers ended up costing the game, which led to Pederson being accused of trying to lose intentionally.
Since that controversial exit, Sudfeld has spent time with the 49ers and Detroit Lions. Interestingly enough, he spent the entire 2024 season on the sidelines after being a preseason cut by the Lions, leaving it up to him to prove if he's avoided any sort of rust or not.
The 49ers will be hosting the Los Angeles Chargers for their preseason finale on Saturday, and Eagles fans will be monitoring to see if Sudfeld sees any legitimate action during the game.
