The Philadelphia Eagles have a chance to repeat history when they visit the Kansas City Chiefs for Sunday's Week 2 showdown. Jalen Hurts & Co. already proved they could handle the Chiefs when they hoisted the Lombardi Trophy seven months ago, and now the Eagles can cement themselves as the Super Bowl favorites with another convincing win this weekend.
Unlike the Eagles, the Chiefs opened the 2025 season with a Week 1 loss, but that doesn't mean the latter isn't a talented team. Kansas City's roster is ripe with playmakers; however, a certain name won't be in the mix during the Super Bowl 59 rematch. On Saturday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Chiefs wideout Xavier Worthy has officially been ruled out for Week 2 due to a shoulder injury.
Eagles' Outlook Improves with Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy Ruled Out
The Eagles have what it takes to go head-to-head with the NFL's best teams, but that doesn't mean they won't welcome the additional help. Worthy is one of the Chiefs' most dynamic players, and the fact that he'll be sidelined for Sunday is music to the City of Brotherly Love's ears.
With Worthy, along with rookie WR Jalen Royals, ruled out and Rashee Rice still suspended, the Chiefs' passing game isn't as scary as it could be. Veteran wideouts Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster are still threats, but the depth beyond them (Tyquan Thornton, Jason Brownlee, Nikko Remigio) is unproven. Kansas City will likely rely on Travis Kelce, too, but a 35-year-old tight end can't be relied on every down, especially if it turns into a shootout.
The Eagles' defense showed what it was capable of by limiting the Dallas Cowboys to 188 receiving yards without a touchdown on 21 receptions last week. Philadelphia's 67.2 Pro Football Focus coverage grade ended up being the 10th-best mark, and the secondary could be in for a similar performance with Kansas City being shorthanded where it counts.
At the end of the day, there are no excuses for the likes of Cooper DeJean, Quinyon Mitchell, Reed Blankenship, and Andrew Mukuba not to have strong performances in the secondary this weekend. Even Adoree' Jackson, who struggled in Week 1, could be in line for a bounce-back performance with the way things are shaping up.
Hopefully, the Eagles won't fumble the opportunity that Worthy's injury has presented them with. If all goes to plan, nobody will have questions about who the NFL's top team is once the dust settles.
