Eagles Bring Back RB After Gainwell Injury to Begin Super Bowl Practices
The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs are the final two teams left. They are slated to link up on Feb. 9 for Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
Head coach Nick Sirianni revealed that a large part of the game plan is ready to go. The positive news continued to trick in for the Eagles on Thursday, as it was announced Philadelphia opened up the practice window for Brandon Graham.
While that is a positive development, the Eagles made other roster moves. Per Zach Berman of PHLY, the team signed RB Lew Nichols to the practice squad.
Eagles News: Lew Nichols Added to Practice Squad on Thursday
Nichols has been around the Eagles for the past two seasons. In January 2024, he signed a reserve/future contract but was cut in August. Nichols was added to the practice squad on Dec. 26 and was cut again on Dec. 31.
Now, one month later, he's back on the practice squad. The Eagles have Saquon Barkley, Kenneth Gainwell, and Will Shipey on the active roster. These three guys are the go-to options, but Gainwell is dealing with both a concussion and knee injury following the NFC Championship, putting a key depth piece in jeopardy of missing this contest if his condition doesn't improve.
The Eagles rushing attack is so dynamic and explosive. In three playoff games, Philadelphia is averaging 227.7 rushing yards with 10 rushing touchdowns.
Barkley is leading the way with 442 rushing yards and five touchdowns in the playoffs. In addition, he has logged four carries of 20-plus yards.
The Eagles' offense is led by the rushing attack, and that won't stop in the Super Bowl. Bringing Nichols onto the practice squad could be something the Eagles are doing to keep Barkley's reps in practice low.
They need him to be as fresh as possible for the Super Bowl. Regardless, the Eagles aren't standing pat. They are making moves with the biggest game of the season on the horizon.
