The Philadelphia Eagles had a busy weekend, especially when it came to the quarterback room. The Eagles acquired Sam Howell in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, and even former Eagle Carson Wentz got into the action, signing with Minnesota to replace Howell in their quarterback room. Philadelphia capped it off by releasing Dorian Thompson-Robinson on Sunday, throwing in the towel on a failed trade acquisition.
Thompson-Robinson is at a crossroads after failing to win the No. 3 quarterback position with the Eagles and failing in spot duty with the Cleveland Browns. But his next landing spot may be more obvious than expected as he could reunite with his former college coach.
Another option for the #Raiders At QB

He played for Chip Kelly at UCLA and while he may not have a ton of experience 15 games in two seasons is nothing to turn your nose up at
He’s also a Vegas kid too https://t.co/SwylUauP2I
Former Eagles QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson Could Reunite with Chip Kelly in Las Vegas
Thompson-Robinson came into the league as an intriguing prospect thanks to his dual-threat ability, and that talent was molded by former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, who is now Pete Carroll’s offensive coordinator with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Kelly retreated to the college ranks after failed coaching stints in Philadelphia and the San Francisco 49ers and coached Thompson-Robinson during his time at UCLA. Robinson started in all five seasons for the Bruins, but his best years came in 2021 and 2022, where he threw for a combined 5,578 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions while completing 66.5% of his passes.
After racking up 1,254 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground during those two seasons, the Browns were enamored enough to select Thompson-Robinson in the fifth round of the 2023 draft. But that upside hasn’t translated to the NFL.
Thompson-Robinson has struggled over his first two seasons, completing 52.6% of his passes for 880 yards, one touchdown, and 10 interceptions in 15 games (five starts). The Eagles acquired him and a 2025 fifth-round pick in exchange for Kenny Pickett, but the change of scenery didn’t help him as he completed just 10-of-16 passes for 73 yards and an interception before being benched for the final preseason game.
The Raiders needed a quarterback after Aidan O’Connell broke his wrist in the team’s preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals, and perhaps a reunion with Kelly could get Thompson-Robinson’s career back on track. Even if he doesn’t make the active roster, a spot on the practice squad could help Thompson-Robinson iron out his bad habits.
Either way, the path for a reunion between two ex-Eagles is clear and could be enough to turn an early failure into long-term success for Thompson-Robinson.
