The Philadelphia Eagles got a head start on roster cutdown day when they made a trade with the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Adding a player to the 90-man roster seems counterproductive when tasked to cut it down to 53 players by Tuesday’s deadline, but the addition of Sam Howell effectively made the decision of who their third-string quarterback will be.
With Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee locked into the top two spots, Howell’s arrival finalized the quarterback room for the upcoming season. That meant bad news for two players vying for the final roster spot, including one who was told to turn in his playbook on Sunday afternoon.

Eagles Waive QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson After Failed Offseason Trade
According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, the Eagles have waived quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Robinson had a brutal preseason, where he completed just 10-of-16 passes for 73 yards and an interception. To make matters worse, he didn’t play in the final preseason game against the New York Jets, squandering an opportunity to revive his career in Philadelphia.
Thompson-Robinson was a fifth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2023 draft. While he had a strong career at UCLA with 10,710 passing yards for 88 touchdowns and 36 interceptions, he was also a dual threat with 1,826 rushing yards for 28 touchdowns.
Although he appeared in 15 NFL games and made five starts in his first two seasons, they were nowhere near the production he had as a Bruin, completing 52.6% of his passes for 880 yards, one touchdown, and 10 interceptions.
This didn’t stop the Eagles from trading for Thompson-Robinson, as they acquired him and a 2025 fifth-round pick in exchange for Kenny Pickett. The idea was for McKee to graduate to the backup position and have Thompson-Robinson battle with Kyle McCord, who was selected in the sixth round of April’s draft, for the third quarterback spot. But Thompson-Robinson looked a lot like the quarterback who had failed in Cleveland.
While McCord has a chance to land on the practice squad, the Eagles decided it would be best for Thompson-Robinson to have another change of scenery. After flaming out with two teams, it’s curious to see which team will take the plunge next on a career that appears to be circling the drain.
