Philadelphia Eagles make decision at starting left tackle.

As we have reached game week and are counting down the days until Sunday, it became a serious question as to who would be playing left tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. On Monday afternoon, this important question was answered.

Doug Pederson announced that Jason Peters would start at left tackle for the Eagles in 2020. This decision comes after experimenting the last few weeks with different options of players at left tackle. Aside from Peters, other players getting reps at the position were Matt Pryor, Jordan Mailata, and rookie Jack Driscoll.

All three are quality depth pieces, but have very little experience in the NFL, especially at LT. Throwing them in to the fire at the most important position on the offensive line would have been a big gamble for the Philadelphia Eagles, especially when their number one job is protecting Carson Wentz’ blind side.

2019 first round pick Andre Dillard was slated to have the starting job after spending his rookie year learning behind Peters. However, after a torn biceps in camp, Dillard was placed on IR and will spend the season recovering from this injury.

Before Dillard’s injury, Peters had re-signed for one year to switch over to right guard after an achilles injury to Pro Bowl guard Brandon Brooks. After Dillard’s injury, the assumption was that Peters would slide back over to left tackle while Pryor would take the starting job at right guard. However, this would not be as easy as it sounds, as rumors came out that Peters wanted a pay raise to start at left tackle.

Already tight on cap space for 2021, the Eagles wanted to save as much as they could this season to carry over into the following year. This led to experimenting with players already on the roster and bringing in outside candidates for left tackle. Veteran Cordy Glenn came to Philadelphia for a weekend visit and workout, with the thought being that he would sign and start at left tackle for the Eagles.

Before the Philadelphia Eagles could make a decision, Peters made it for them. Peters went into Doug Pederson’s office Monday and told him he would switch over to left tackle on his current contract. Out of good faith and doing it for the team, “The Bodyguard” is moving back to his original position.

In the end, the left tackle situation has worked out a lot better for the Philadelphia Eagles. They get their best left tackle in franchise history back for one more year, and bring stability back to the offensive line. Aside from Brooks at right guard, they are able to run back their entire starting offensive line heading into 2020.
