Despite waiving him just a few days ago, the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to terms with WR Marcus Green

Following veteran WR Marquise Goodwin’s decision to opt out, rumors were circulating pretty heavily that the Philadelphia Eagles could be looking to bring in a new wide receiver to fill out the position’s depth heading into training camp. Names like Taylor Gabriel and Paul Richardson were tossed around, and some fans of course brought up the enigma that is Antonio Brown.

However, it was a far less talked about WR who the Eagles actually ended up signing.

Drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft, Marcus Green did not play a single NFL snap during his rookie season. He was cut by the Falcons during the final wave of roster decisions leading into preseason, and then was added to the Eagles practice squad the very next day.

More from Section 215

Green remained on Philadelphia’s practice squad for the entirety of the 2019 season, and despite the Eagles calling up wide receivers left and right last year, he was actually one of the few guys who never got moved up. Green however was signed to a reserve/future contract in January following the Eagles playoff loss to Seattle.

The Eagles overhauled the wide receiver position during the draft, adding four pass catchers in total. Jalen Reagor was selected in the first round, John Hightower in the fifth, Quez Watkins in the sixth, and then Marquise Goodwin was acquired in a pick swap with the San Franciiso 49ers. While none of these names are certified stars in the NFL currently (Reagor certainly has the tools to be one soon), it was a undoubtedly a lot of depth to add at once.

This left guys like Marcus Green on the outside looking in, and the former Louisiana-Monroe prospect was released by the Eagles on July 28th.

However, just two days later and we all received the news regarding Goodwin’s very understandable decision to opt out of the NFL 2020 season. With the Eagles now needing an extra camp body at the WR position, they called up Green’s number and added him back to the active roster.

At 5-8 191lbs, Green actually has a similar physical build to that of Goodwin. He’s lightning quick, and adds quite a bit to the team in terms of kick returning and running ability. During his breakout junior season, Green led the entire NCAA in average kickoff yards per return (32.4 yards) and total kickoff returns for touchdowns (4). He finished his four year collegiate career with 202 receptions, 2,698 receiving yards, 492 rushing yards, and 29 total touchdowns.

The Philadelphia Eagles current WR room now looks like this:

  • DeSean Jackson
  • Jalen Reagor
  • JJ Arcega-Whiteside
  • Greg Ward
  • John Hightower
  • Quez Watkins
  • Robert Davis
  • Deontay Burnett
  • Manasseh Bailey
  • Marcus Green
  • Alshon Jeffery (PUP)

Next. LeSean McCoy reportedly turned down interest from Philadelphia Eagles. dark

Despite having an abundance of depth at the position, the Eagles are heading into the 2020 season with more question marks than answers at the wide receiver position. Green is fun gadget player who will likely end up back on the team’s practice squad come September, but he does very little in terms of actually replacing Goodwin. The Eagles adding another wideout in the coming days would not surprise me.
