The Philadelphia Eagles will reportedly be without the services of the speedy WR in 2020.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Marquise Goodwin has infomed the team that he plans to opt for the 2020 season due to COVID-19 related health concerns. Goodwin and his wife just recently had a child, and are likely worried about her well-being moving forward.

Goodwin was a draft night trade this past offseason, as the Eagles agreed to swap sixth round picks with the San Francisco 49ers in order to acquire his services. Goodwin was one of four wide receivers that the Eagles obtained during the draft, as they attempted to completely revamp their receiving corp, with an obvious emphasis being put on speed.

Goodwin has really struggled with injuries the past two seasons, appearing in just 20 total games for the 49ers through 2018 and 2019. However, the year before that he started all 16 games for San Francisco, recording a career-high 56 catches and 962 yards.

The Eagles likely weren’t expecting a whole lot from Goodwin heading into 2020, however he provided valuable depth at a position the team has really struggled with in the past.

When DeSean Jackson went down week one last year, the team never truly recovered. They looked stagnant and lethargic all season long as they attempted to cope without a proper deep threat. At the very least, Goodwin provided genuine insurance at that position in the offense.

Heading into training camp it wasn’t entirely clear who all would make the Eagles roster at the WR position. However, following the news of Goodwin’s likely absence, that cut down process just became a lot simpler.

The Eagles wide receiver room will likely consist of DeSean Jackson, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Greg Ward, and rookies Jalen Reagor, John Hightower, and Quez Watkins. Veteran Alshon Jeffery is expected to start the year on the PUP (physically unable to participate) list.

It’s a tad dissipating that we’ll likely never get to see Goodwin running up and down the field in Eagles’ midnight free, but it’s completely understandable. Family comes first, and prioritizing his daughter’s health is far more important than anything football related.
