With Nelson Agholor all but out for the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 16 game against the Dallas Cowboys, it’s safe to say his tenure with the team is finished.

The Nelson Agholor-era of Philadelphia Eagles football is over.

To be fair, technically that may not be true, as the fifth-year USC product could, in theory, return for Week 17 or the postseason (god willing), but for all intents and purposes, by sitting out the team’s pivotal Week 16 bout against the Dallas Cowboys with a knee injury, the writing is all but etched into the wall.

But honestly, is that really a bad thing?

More from Philadelphia Eagles

In games where Agholor racks up 40 or more yards, the Eagles are a perfect 0-5 in 2019. They have also lost both games where Agholor hauled in a touchdown – Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons and Week 3 against the Detroit Lions. I mean for crying out loud, Agholor hasn’t even caught a pass of longer than 25 yards since Week 2; how is that even possible?

Outside of a few fading glimpses of the player once dubbed the next-Jeremy Maclin, Agholor has been a big old nothing burger for the Birds in 2019, and whether because of injury or diminishing play, that’s not going to change any time soon.

Despite appearing in six more games, Agholor only has only picked up 221 more yards than recent wunderkind Greg Ward – on 21 more catches no less.

Who would you rather see suit up against the Dallas Cowboys with the playoffs on the line, Nelson Agholor or Greg Ward?

Granted, having both would be nice, as the Eagles are slated to enter Week 16 with only three wide receivers on their active roster – Ward, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, and 2017 Washington sixth-round pick Robert Davis – but every pass going to Agholor is one not thrown to Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Miles Sanders, and even Boston Scott. And all of these non-receivers have been far more dynamic in 2019 than the Birds’ $9-plus million man.

Even Josh Perkins has put in work when his number has been called, and he wasn’t even on the active roster until December.

If the Birds can somehow get past the Cowboys and then the New York Giants, and then the NFC’s fifth-seed, DeSean Jackson will be back and ready to rock, now that is what fans should be excited about (more on that here).

Next. ‘Twas the game before Christmas. dark

As for Nelson Agholor? Well, he’ll go down as an alright first-round draft pick by a team that has a real issue procuring premium talent in the NFL Draft. He isn’t Danny Watkins, but he’s also not Lane Johnson, he’s just… alright. Thanks for the memories, but as the Philadelphia Eagles prepare for the future, why keep hoping for the past to come back for the rescue. This isn’t the new Star Wars trilogy (burn).
