With the Philadelphia Phillies in need of a new manager for the 2018 season, John Farrell should be one of the names on their list.

Over the last few days, rumors have been swirling about Ruben Amaro Jr. possibly taking over the manager duties for the Philadelphia Phillies during the 2018 season, although nothing is set in stone at the moment. However, the one name that should be part of the conversation for the Phillies is former Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, who all of a sudden became available as of Wednesday.

Just one day after losing to the Houston Astros in the Division Series, the Red Sox made the move official of parting ways with Farrell after five seasons. As surprising as this move may seem when considering Boston did win the World Series in 2013 under Farrell along with their recent back-to-back division titles, the early exits in each of the last two seasons despite high expectations certainly didn’t help the former manager’s case.

Not to mention, inconsistency has been an issue for the Red Sox at times since the two years Boston failed to earn a trip to the postseason under Farrell (2014 and 2015) resulted in the team finishing at the bottom of the AL East. But despite all of the issues in Boston, a fresh start in a city like Philadelphia with a team on the rise could benefit both parties, especially Farrell.

The Phillies may have finished below .500 in each of the last five seasons, but when looking at the emergence of young players such as Rhys Hoskins along with the improvement after the All-Star break, the future appears to be bright for this squad. And while convincing a manager in Farrell to come on board seems like a long shot, it can’t hurt Philadelphia to at least try to see if he would be interested to work with all this young talent.
