The Philadelphia Eagles' drafting Jihaad Campbell was one of the surprise developments of the offseason. The rookie linebacker easily could've gone inside the top 20 picks based on being able to fit in a myriad of systems. However, falling to the Eagles has given the franchise a cheap answer in the middle of the field, and Campbell the opportunity to instantly compete for championships.
It is a win for both sides, but it also turns up the pressure on a rookie to instantly meet Philly's incredibly high defensive standards.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio isn't exactly shy when it comes to calling out his players. If you're starting in Fangio's system, a level of greatness is going to be demanded. Already, Campbell has found this out with the coaching staff calling out his inability to slow things down in practice. Playing with a level of intensity to prepare for the regular season is important. However, this can be taken a step too far, and the Philly rookie quickly found this out. It wasn't the last time the coaching staff would note a need for improvement, with this week bringing a new challenge for the young linebacker.

Eagles Rookie Jihaad Campbell Continues Early Camp Struggles
Fangio has given Campbell a chance to play a handful of reps off the edge. While the Eagles have incredible pass-rushing talent, it makes sense to see what the rookie might bring in a different role. When Fangio was asked about this, the DC simply offered that Campbell "needs a lot of work at it." This is hardly an endorsement and continues early camp struggles from the rookie. Struggles that are to be expected as Campbell makes the leap.
All of the needed skill and energy are there, the coaching staff must simply help teach the rookie how ot harness it. Dealing with concerns over playing through the whistle or struggling at the edge position shouldn't dampen excitement about what is ahead for the young defender. Campbell is going to have an instant impact and has joined the perfect defense. Philly doesn't need the rookie to be a consistent presence off the edge.
Simply playing his position at a high level and learning to rein in his tendency to play through the whistle will be more than enough. Philly's defensive talent remains near the top of the league, making it impossible to believe Campbell won't make the needed adjustments and have an incredible year-one impact.
