Surprise Eagles Release Almost Immediately Backfired on Philly in Week 8

The Eagles dodged a metaphorical bullet after Thursday's practice as fifth-year linebacker Zack Baun was back at practice after missing sessions earlier this week.

Philadelphia's linebacking group became perilously thin following Baun's injury and the sudden release of failed signing Devin White. If Baun isn't able to suit up on Sunday against the Bengals, the Eagles' defense could be in big trouble.

Luckily, it looks like Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni may avoid disaster.

Eagles LB Zack Baun Returns to Practice on Thursday

A 2020 third-round pick by the Saints, Baun joined the Eagles this offseason and has started every game thus far. He's an experienced veteran with playmaking chops. Without him, Philadelphia could get carved up over the middle by Joe Burrow and a desperate Bengals squad.

Baun has allowed only an 84.2 passer rating when targeted in coverage this year, a stronger number than it appears considering linebackers typically cover underneath routes that're easier to complete.

With 57 tackles and two sacks already, Baun's impact has been obvious on a defense in desperate need of quality play over the middle. It's unclear whether he'll play on Sunday or be limited but it's a blessing nonetheless to see him participate in practice. If he's a full go on Friday, Eagles fans should breathe a sigh of relief.

Roseman has long been praised as one of the very best general managers in the NFL. However, his decisions since the Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs have justifiably raised questions among fans. This could've been the latest embarrassment but it appears Philadelphia's long-tenured leader will emerge unscathed.

Pay close attention to the end-of-week injury report. Baun's status suddenly is the most important storyline entering the contest and could loom large going into a pivotal showdown.
