With the Philadelphia 76ers drafting former UCLA center Adem Bona in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft and signing veteran center Andre Drummond to start free agency, the writing is on the wall for forward Paul Reed.

Reed has been one of the topics of conversation this offseason for Sixers fans as his contract for the 2024/25 is non-guaranteed through Jan. 10, 2025. The 25-year-old big man signed a three-year, $23.5 million offer sheet with the Utah Jazz last summer, which the Sixers matched.

However, one of the stipulations put in by the Jazz was that the Sixers had to make it past the first round of the playoffs or Reed’s contract for the 2024/25 would be non-guaranteed. Philly lost to the New York Knicks in six games in the first round, leaving Reed in an interesting spot for next season.

Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday that the Sixers are expected to waive or trade the former second-round pick. If Philadelphia goes with the first option, it could net the team $9.2 million in cap space, which they can use to address a few more needs on the roster.

Reed had his best year as a professional with the Sixers this past season, averaging 7.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in 19.4 minutes per game. While it was good to see the former second-round pick take his game to another level, he became unplayable in the playoffs.

The 25-year-old big man struggled mightily against the Knicks as he only produced 1.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 7.2 minutes per game. When the Sixers needed positive production in the non-Embiid minutes, they couldn’t get that from Reed.

If the Sixers do part ways with Reed this offseason, he won’t take long to find his next role. He’s shown major growth from his rookie season to now.
