Sixers Land First Big Outside Signing of 2024 Free Agency
There's been a ton of buzz around the Philadelphia 76ers heading into free agency as GM Daryl Morey looks to strengthen this hopeful contender. Many are wondering what kind of big star the Sixers will bring in to complement stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, but any championship threat knows how important a strong bench can be.
As it turns out, Philly has addressed its depth in the opening hours of free agency.
The Athletic's Shams Charania reports center Andre Drummond is in agreement on a two-year deal with the 76ers. This pact will run the Sixers $10 million, who reunite with the big man after he played in 49 games for the franchise during the 2021-22 campaign.
Drummond generated plenty of interest heading into free agency after a nice bounce-back season in 2023-24 with the Chicago Bulls. The former All-Star posted a solid 8.4 points and 9.0 rebounds this campaign, his highest marks in each of those categories since 2020-21. He also suited up in a whopping 79 games, his most since the 2018-19 season.
A former All-NBA selection, Drummond adds a strong supporting piece to this frontcourt who can relieve Embiid in the nightly rotation, while also stepping up to start whenever the latter is sidelined. Considering Embiid's coming off of another injury-plagued campaign that even bled into the postseason, having someone who can help preserve the MVP during the regular season is incredibly important.
With Drummond (assuming he officially signs), Paul Reed and Adem Bona now in the stable, Philadelphia has a number of depth options that set them up well in the frontcourt for the 2024-25 season.
