The Philadelphia Eagles completely revamped their defensive backfield this offseason as they brought back C.J. Gardner-Johnson and drafted Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell. With the reinstatement of Isaiah Rodgers as well, the Eagles have a much deeper and more talented secondary for next season. This was much needed after the defense fell apart in the second half of the season in 2023 and boasted one of the worst pass defenses in the league.

Even though the cornerback and safety rotation is much better than last season, there are still some questions that need answering. James Bradberry is still somehow on the team. DeJean missed the second half of last season and a significant amount of training camp. Who will start opposite Darius Slay is still unclear.

Therefore, the Eagles could add another veteran backfield defender into the mix to feel better about their rotation. Fortunately for them, a familiar face just became available and would make the perfect addition.

NFL News: Former Eagle Jalen Mills is Now A Free Agent With Suitors

After signing with the New York Giants earlier in the offseason, Jalen Mills was just released, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The veteran cornerback and safety had spent the last three seasons with the Patriots after signing a four-year, $24 million deal after his five-season stint in Philadelphia.

The 30-year-old boasts rare defensive versatility. In the early parts of his career, he was used at the corner and the slot. In his final season with the Eagles, he started playing more safety. In 2023, he spent most of his time in the box and in free safety.

That is the kind of versatility the Eagles fell in love with when selecting Cooper DeJean. Mills would be an excellent veteran to add to the mix to help mentor the young star out of Iowa. Plus, the Eagles could really use more depth both at safety and corner.

Mills was the starting cornerback for the Eagles when Philly won the Super Bowl in 2017. That remains the high watermark for his career but the eight-year veteran should still have enough gas in the tank to contribute in a limited role.
