Eagles Rumor: Top Free Agent Still in Play After Big Spending
By Cem Yolbulan
The Philadelphia Eagles are having a very busy offseason, transforming the roster after a disappointing end to their 2023 campaign. They were big spenders on the free agency market bringing in high-profile starters like Saquon Barkley, Bryce Huff, and former Eagle C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
The team will undoubtedly look very different next season, especially on the defensive end. There are almost certainly more trades and free-agency acquisitions coming on that end. The immediate need for the Eagles continues to be the secondary. Fortunately for them, there is still one player available on the market who perfectly fills that need: safety Justin Simmons.
According to Adam Caplan of Inside the Birds, Philadelphia is already showing interest in the 30-year-old defender.
Eagles Rumors: Philadelphia Interested in S Justin Simmons
Simmons has been a mainstay with the Denver Broncos ever since he was drafted in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He has played at least 12 games and over 90% of snaps in each of the last seven years.
Age 31 for a backfield defender is on the older side and the Eagles have certainly had their fair share of disappointing veteran additions on that end in recent years. However, Simmons had another excellent season last year, registering three interceptions, eight passes defended and 70 tackles in 15 games, earning his second Pro Bowl selection.
He is also quite possibly the best free agent left on the market right now. The Eagles, who still have over $30 million in cap space, would benefit from bringing in one of the best in the league in a position of need.
Despite the busy offseason, the Eagles (+135) are still lagging behind the Dallas Cowboys in NFC East division odds. Perhaps bolstering their defensive unit further would help them become the favorites.
