Eagles Rookie on the Verge of Stealing Veteran’s Starting Job
The Philadelphia Eagles head into their bye in Week 5. Although it's early in the season, the bye came at the perfect time. The Eagles are struggling right now on both sides of the ball. In Week 4, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Philadelphia 33-16.
Now, they have a week to reevaluate what's going on with the team. One area that they are looking at is the slot cornerback spot.
And Cooper DeJean is quickly climbing the depth chart and getting close to being on the field regularly.
Eagles News: Cooper Dejean Is Close To Being Ready
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was speaking with reporters on Tuesday where he revealed that DeJean is getting better and is close to being put out there.
"Cooper [DeJean] is closing in on being ready where at some point we’ll put him out there. But Avonte [Maddox] has played fine in some areas. Obviously he’s had some plays he’d like to have back, like all of us, including me. But he’s getting better."

Maddox has struggled through four games, logging a 52.9 PFF coverage grade. In coverage this season, he's given up 10 receptions for 115 yards and a score. He also has an 88.7 passer rating allowed.
Those stats aren't appealing and the Eagles believe that DeJean may bring some more production to that spot. The Iowa product has only played eight snaps in 2024 but he was selected in the second round due to his athleticism, coverage skills, and versatility.
At Iowa, he logged 163 snaps in the slot and after the bye week, he may be getting some reps at nickel back. That's something Eagles fans have been envisioning for some time now.
