Eagles Must Sign Former All-Pro Free Agent Who Just Became Available

If the Eagles want to end the 2023 NFL season with a Super Bowl title, they must go after one specific standout free agent.
It'd be in the Philadelphia Eagles' best interest to sign free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul, who announced he's ready to sign with a contender.

It's no secret that opposing quarterbacks hate facing the Philadelphia Eagles. After all, Nick Sirianni's team heads into their Week 10 bye with the fourth-best pass rush in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus, clocking in at a grade of 81.8.

But what if the Eagles could further fortify one of the best defensive units in the league? After all, doing so would likely improve their Super Bowl LVIII odds, which already rank second-best among all 32 teams at the midseason point.

Fortunately, there's one available free agent out there who would help take Philadelphia over the top.

Eagles Roster Rumors

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported earlier this week that Jason Pierre-Paul is "willing to sign with the practice squad of a playoff contender." The 34-year-old has remained in free agency after playing 14 games (13 starts) with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022.

Adding Pierre-Paul would give the Eagles a massive boost. The 34-year-old veteran is a three-time Pro-Bowler who finished fourth in the 2011 NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting. He also ranks seventh among active players with 94.5 sacks across 179 career games.

The Eagles faithful are also more than familiar with his work given that we had to see him twice a year during the first eight seasons of his career with the New York Giants.

What also makes signing Pierre-Paul a no-brainer is Nakobe Dean's injury situation. The 2022 third-rounder is missing at least the next four games due to a Lisfranc sprain. With how important the pass rush is to Philadelphia's defensive identity, a helping hand would be appreciated.

Understandably, some fans are likely wondering if Pierre-Paul has anything left in the tank. He might not be one of the best defenders in the league anymore, but he still recorded five broken-up passes, three sacks, and an interception with the Ravens last season — not bad for Year 13 in the NFL.

That's without mentioning how he also finished with a PFF defensive grade of at least 66.1 eight times in 15 outings between the 2022 regular season and playoffs, highlighting how he shows up to play more often than not.

Granted, Pierre-Paul's history means he'll likely see a fair amount of attention over the coming weeks. Hopefully, he realizes there's no team better to chase a third Super Bowl title with than the Eagles.
