Eagles Make First Cut in Backup QB Competition
By Cem Yolbulan
Like every team in the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles are desperately trying to finalize their 53-man roster for the new season. This means that a ton of players who spent the training camp with the Eagles will find themselves on the waiver wire before Tuesday's roster cutdown deadline.
This includes at least one quarterback. The Eagles revamped their quarterback rotation this offseason by trading for Kenny Pickett. 2023 draft pick Tanner McKee has looked impressive in preseason, raising questions about who QB2 should be to start the season.
The Eagles had also signed veteran quarterback Will Grier earlier in the offseason, reuniting him with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, with whom he worked in Dallas. The 29-year-old former Cowboy had a chance to make the backup quarterback competition more interesting in training camp. However, according to Tom Pelissero, Grier is the odd man out as he was among the first batch of roster cuts on Monday.
Eagles News: Philadelphia Waives QB Will Grier
This doesn't come as a surprise. The former third-round pick hasn't played in an NFL game since his rookie season with the Carolina Panthers. Outside of two starts in 2019, Grier hasn't seen a regular-season snap. His career numbers of 53.8% completion rate, zero touchdowns, and four interceptions were always going to make it hard for him to challenge Pickett and McKee for a roster spot.
The bigger question that needs answering is whether there will be any more cuts in the QB room. Most teams in the league have two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. However, the Eagles carried three quarterbacks on their active roster last year so it's definitely possible that both McKee and Pickett will make the final cut.
Regardless of how many quarterbacks are on the final roster, it seems like the QB2 role is Pickett's to lose right now.
