Eagles Finally Cut Young Player Who Failed to Climb Depth Chart
By Jovan Alford
The Philadelphia Eagles haven’t made many significant roster moves since training camp opened last week at the Novacare Complex. Last week, the team signed wide receiver Griffin Herbert and waived offensive tackle Gottlieb Ayedze.
However, the Eagles made a notable move in the secondary on Tuesday and addressed their offensive line depth. According to Zach Berman of PHLY, the Eagles signed offensive lineman Nick Gates to the 90-man roster.
To make room for Gates on Philly’s roster, the Eagles shockingly parted ways with cornerback Mario Goodrich. Goodrich has been with the organization since 2022 after the Eagles signed him as an undrafted free agent.
The former Clemson defensive back struggled to move up Philly’s depth chart despite playing four games in 2023 (one start). Goodrich made his first NFL start in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams. The 6-foot cornerback recorded one tackle and played 18 percent of defensive snaps.
It doesn’t come as a surprise to see the Eagles move on from Goodrich as they have a ton of depth at the cornerback spot. Last season, the Eagles started Josh Jobe and Eli Ricks due to injuries in the secondary, which wasn’t a good sign for Goodrich.
With the additions Philadelphia made this offseason at cornerback, Goodrich would have a hard time making the 53-man roster but likely would’ve stayed on the practice squad. With preseason on the horizon, the Eagles will continue to pair down their roster as they prepare for a pivotal 2024 season.
