The Philadelphia Eagles were offseason winners. GM Howie Roseman used different avenues to improve the roster ahead of the 2024 season.

They addressed areas of weakness through free agency and the NFL Draft. One big weakness for the Eagles in 2023 was their pass defense but they made two significant additions.

In April's draft, Philadelphia drafted Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean as they looked to overhaul that group.

As we approach Week 2, one rookie defender has been taking practice reps at nickel CB.

Eagles News: Cooper Dejean Takes Reps at Nickel CB

Per Thomas Petersen, DeJean has been getting practice reps at slot corner, with the plan likely for him to replace Avonte Maddox. In the season opener last week, Maddox gave up three receptions for 30 yards, and a score, and finished with a 43.3 coverage grade according to PFF.

The Eagles are looking for more and DeJean may be able to provide that. The Iowa product is an excellent athlete who owns loose hips that help him change directions with ease. He has good play recognition and has the versatility to line up all over the field.

In his collegiate career, he played 163 snaps at slot and 1,192 snaps at outside corner. The Eagles have Darius Slay and Mitchell out on the boundaries, which is why DeJean was bumped inside.

Regardless, Eagles fans will be thrilled with this development. DeJean was added with the 40th overall pick but missed the majority of training camp with a hamstring injury. He's now healthy and Philly is wasting no time getting him acclimated to the system.

It'll be a matter of time until DeJean is starting in the slot and the Eagles have two rookies starting in the secondary.
