The Philadelphia Eagles made a surprise cut on Wednesday with the final 53-man roster due in under a week, releasing veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah.

After signing a one-year deal with the team back in April, Uzomah failed to make a major impact. He was outshined by Grant Calcaterra and Albert Okwuegbunam throughout the summer, leading to Uzomah's eventual release.

He'll now have the opportunity to catch on with another team before cutdown day. Entering his 10th year in the NFL, Uzomah has a sound reputation as a capable blocker and pass-catcher in the right offense.

Eagles News: Philadelphia Releases TE C.J. Uzomah

Originally a fifth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the 31-year-old tight end spent the first seven years of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals before joining the New York Jets in 2022.

Uzomah has 192 career receptions for 1,881 yards and 16 TDs. His best year came in 2021 with the Bengals, accumulating 493 receiving yards on 49 catches with five scores. Best projected as a backup tight end who could be a threat in the red zone, Uzomah can still fill a valuable role for the right team.

However, with Dallas Goedert firmly established as the top tight end and impressive summer workouts from the younger Calcaterra and Okwuegbunam, Philadelphia wasn't the ideal fit.

The Eagles still have several big decisions to make over the next handful of days, with some players even looking like trade candidates. They'll play their final preseason game on Saturday against the Vikings, giving the coaching staff one last opportunity to evaluate players on the bubble.

While Uzomah was never going to have a major role in the offense, his release indicates the organization's plan to prioritize youth and internal development as it tries to rebound from last year's disappointing early playoff exit.

Nick Sirianni's job could be on the line if things go poorly in 2024, so he's determined to leave no stone left unturned in his quest for another Super Bowl appearance.
