Eagles Bring Back Playmaker Whose NFL Career Appeared Over
By Jovan Alford
The Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver unit has shockingly been hit hard by injuries to start the 2024 season. The Eagles have been without A.J. Brown for the last two games because of a hamstring injury and saw DeVonta Smith enter the league’s concussion protocol after taking a brutal hit in Week 3.
In addition to Brown and Smith, Philadelphia also saw Britain Covey suffer a shoulder injury that will reportedly keep him on the injury shelf until November. Covey was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, meaning the Eagles had an open spot on the 53-man roster.
According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Eagles signed tight end Jack Stoll from the practice squad to take Covey’s spot on the roster. Additionally, the team signed wide receiver John Ross to the practice squad.
Based on the litany of injuries Philadelphia has at the receiver spot, it's not a surprise to see them bring back the veteran pass catcher.
Ross signed with the Eagles in late May after trying out with the team during rookie minicamp. The former first-round pick went to training camp with the Birds and played in the preseason. He didn’t have any breakout performances in the three-game summer circuit.
However, Ross recorded four receptions (seven targets) for 37 yards. The former Kansas City Chiefs and New York Giants wideout was cut ahead of last month’s roster deadline.
Even though he didn’t make the team in August, Ross did enough in the preseason and camp to warrant a return heading into Week 4.
It’s unclear if Ross will get promoted from the practice squad before Sunday’s game. However, with Jahan Dotson, Parris Campbell, and rookie Johnny Wilson as the only healthy receivers, Ross may see the field sooner rather than later.
