Eagles Bolster Defensive Depth With Veteran Free Agent Signing
By Cem Yolbulan
The Philadelphia Eagles used the offseason to revamp their defensive rotation and playcalling as they brought in experienced coach Vic Fangio as their defensive coordinator. After suffering an epic collapse in the second half of last season, the Eagles are trying to make sure that doesn't happen again.
With that objective in mind, they tackled their secondary depth by drafting Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean and bringing back CJ Gardner-Johnson. They also signed talented pass rusher Bryce Huff from the New York Jets.
However, the Eagles aren't done adding to their roster. On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Philadelphia is signing linebacker Shaquille Quarterman to a one-year deal.
NFL News: Eagles Sign Linebacker Shaquille Quarterman in Free Agency
Quarterman spent the first four seasons of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft pick. He became a free agent this spring when his rookie deal expired.
The 26-year-old linebacker was seldom used on the defensive end and was almost exclusively a special teamer. In four seasons, he saw 171 defensive snaps and 931 special teams snaps. Whether the Eagles will continue to utilize him strictly as a special teamer, or they see him as a potential contributor in Vic Fangio's defense remains to be seen.
The Eagles have Bryce Huff and Josh Sweat to start on the outside while relying on Zack Baun and Devin White as the inside linebackers. Nakobe Dean, Brandon Graham, Jalyx Hunt, and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. provide further depth for the rotation, making it difficult for Quarterman to see extended snaps as a linebacker.
