Eagle on the Chopping Block 'Has Yet to Stand Out Much' in Camp
By Jovan Alford
After a frustrating end to the 2023 season, the Philadelphia Eagles overhauled their secondary this offseason. The team signed CJ Gardner-Johnson to a three-year deal after he spent last year in Detroit and then used their first two draft picks on Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.
With Mitchell and DeJean now in the fold at the cornerback spot, James Bradberry’s spot as the Eagles’ CB2 was in jeopardy. However, much to the surprise of everyone, Bradberry made the switch to safety this offseason.
Bradberry going to safety allows him to possibly keep his spot on the Eagles’ 53-man roster and showcase his versatility.
However, the early reports out of training camp suggest that the veteran defensive back hasn’t done much to impress the Eagles coaching staff.
"The Eagles are on the hook for all of his 2024 salary, but it’s hard to see him on the 53-man roster by the start of the season, wrote Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Bradberry has yet to stand out much, but his coverage did seem to force backup quarterback Kenny Pickett into throwing wide of running back Will Shipley."
Bradberry had a rough 2023 season which shocked many Eagles fans as he played well in 2022 en route to the team’s Super Bowl appearance against the Kansas City Chiefs. Last season, the veteran cornerback posted 54 combined tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery.
The 30-year-old defensive back struggled in pass coverage mightily as he produced a 59.4 completion percentage and allowed 11 receiving touchdowns (career-high). Opposing QBs made it a point of emphasis to target Bradberry and the Eagles saw that late last year when they didn’t have Darius Slay.
Bradberry still has time to change the narrative about him with the Eagles during training camp and into the preseason. Preseason will be very important for Bradberry because he switched positions this offseason.
If the Eagles don’t feel like Bradberry is a good fit, best believe they’ll evaluate the trade market as there’s nothing to say that he can’t bounce back at his natural position.
