3 Eagles Who Won't Survive the Preseason
By Randy Gurzi
The Philadelphia Eagles won their preseason opener over the Baltimore Ravens on a last-second field goal from Jake Elliott. The game came down to the wire and linebacker Patrick Johnson was the hero as he caused the turnover that led to the 49-yard kick.
However, the preseason isn't about wins and losses — even though it was an enjoyable ending, especially for the guys on the field. Instead, this time is all about players on the bubble earning their spot on the team.
As that happens, others unfortunately lose their place. That's what we look at here as we identify three Eagles who might not make it through the preseason.
3. Joseph Ngata, Wide Receiver
Considered a player to watch when training camp began, Joseph Ngata was a standout after being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder spent his rookie season on the practice squad and was looking to make an impression this year.
Following their first preseason game, the hype might have slowed down.
He's been quiet in camp and had no receptions on three targets against Baltimore. The main issue wasn't that he didn't catch any of the passes either. Instead, the concerning point was how he couldn't shake coverage and didn't fight his way to the football. Typically, a player with his size can box out defenders if they can't run past them but Ngata seemed to struggle in both those areas.
Philly has a deep corps of receivers led by A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Even with rookie Ainias Smith struggling, there are too many talented players ahead of Ngata for him to survive without showing marked improvement.
