Perfect Eagles Signing to Solve Kicker Issues Snatched Up by Another Team
The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the NFL's top Super Bowl contenders heading into the 2024 regular season's final stretch.
Heading into Week 15's clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Eagles lead the NFC East with an 11-2 record and are just one win behind the Detroit Lions for the best record in the conference. If they play their cards right down the stretch, Nick Sirianni's team could enter the playoffs with a first-round bye.
Having said that, Eagles fans would feel a lot more confident about their outlook if their kicking situation was more reliable. Veteran special teamer Jake Elliott has been difficult to trust throughout the campaign, having made only 75.0% of his field-goal attempts thus far — the second-worst mark of his eight-year career.
The Eagles had the perfect opportunity to replace Elliott with a more reliable leg this week, however, the opportunity passed them by,
Eagles News: Patriots Sign K John Parker Romo to Practice Squad
After being placed on waivers by the Minnesota Vikings, K John Parker Romo has been signed to the New England Patriots' practice squad, per NFL insider Mike Garafolo.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why the Eagles should've been all-in when it comes to targeting Romo.
Since making his NFL debut with the Vikings back in Week 10, the 27-year-old kicker has been one of the league's most consistent specialists. Romo has since gone on to connect on 11-of-12 field-goal attempts (91.7%) while only missing one of his eight extra-point tries (87.5%).
The ex-Virginia Tech product has also shown impressive range, connecting on a personal-best 55-yard attempt against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 13. For comparison, Elliott has yet to hit a 50-yard FG on five attempts this season and is 21-of-36 (58.3%) from that distance since 2018.
With Romo heading to the Patriots, it's clear that the Eagles are still confident in Elliott despite his struggles. On Monday, Sirianni told PHLY's Zach Berman that the team's belief in the struggling kicker is "very high" and that they're confident he can bounce back down the stretch.
It remains to be seen if Elliott's turnaround can happen as early as this weekend when the Eagles host the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's a Week 15 collision where Philadelphia is projected as the 5-point favorite over its cross-state rival on DraftKings Sportsbook.
