Perfect Backup QB to Help Eagles in Playoffs Now Available
The 2024 NFL postseason is nearly here and the Philadelphia Eagles are hoping to make another deep playoff run.
With a 12-2 record ahead of the Week 16 action, the Eagles have cemented themselves as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. Head coach Nick Sirianni has his players performing efficiently on both sides of the ball, leaving time to tell if they can maintain this high level of play in the playoffs.
Even though things appear promising at the moment, a team's outlook can change on a dime in the NFL. Injuries are all a part of the sport, which is why it's important to have reliable depth at this time of the year — especially when it comes to the quarterback position.
If the Eagles are looking to add another veteran arm to their ranks, the perfect backup option just became available.
Eagles Should Target Free Agent QB Teddy Bridgewater
On Tuesday's edition of the NFL Network's "Insiders," veteran QB Teddy Bridgewater told insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero that he plans to come out of retirement and return to the NFL this season.
"We'll see how (the) next week and a half, two weeks play out. I might be signing with a team or something," Bridgewater said. "Then returning back to coach high school football in February. So, we'll see."
In February, Bridgewater returned to his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, to begin his coaching career. The venture paid off as the 32-year-old led the Bulls to a 12-2 record, culminating with Saturday's 41-0 win over William M. Raines High School 41-0 in the Division 3A Florida High School Athletic Association Championship game.
With his high school coaching career on pause, Bridgewater could be someone who the Eagles target.
While there's no denying what Hurts can do on the gridiron, Philadelphia's QB options beyond him are shaky, to say the least. Former 2022 first-rounder Kenny Pickett is currently the primary backup QB, however, he hasn't exactly impressed in his early NFL career with only 4,479 passing yards and 13 touchdowns with as many interceptions in 24 starts.
Tanner McKee, the third-string QB, doesn't instill much confidence, either. The 24-year-old passer has yet to make an NFL start and the last thing the Eagles want is to throw him into a playoff situation that he isn't prepared for.
Meanwhile, Bridgewater would bring more experience to the Eagles' QB room than Pickett and McKee have combined. The former Louisville product has gone 33-32 across 65 starts since 2014, completing 66.4% of passes for 15,120 yards, 75 TDs, 47 INTs, and a 90.5 passer rating.
It's the time of the season when injuries are really starting to impact teams, meaning Bridgewater could draw a lot of attention from around the league. If that's the case, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman might want to call the veteran QB's agent sooner rather than later.
