The newly-crowned Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles must find a new offensive coordinator for next season. Kellen Moore was officially named the head coach of the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday.

Over the last few weeks, it’s been reported Moore was the frontrunner for the head coaching job in the Big Easy. And with the Eagles ending their season on Sunday night, it was only a matter of when not if before the news became official.

This isn’t ideal news for the Eagles. They would like some consistency at OC, which they haven’t had since the 2020 and 2021 seasons with Shane Steichen.

However, after seeing how things played out in 2023, the hope is Philadelphia will be better equipped this time. As for Moore, this is a long-awaited opportunity for him as he’s been mentioned for years as a potential head coaching candidate.

However, Moore taking one of the least appealing openings this offseason for several reasons could hinder Moore, as described by one NFL executive. In a poll from The Athletic ranking the top 5 NFL head coach hires, Moore was ranked fifth with seven points, far behind Aaron Glenn, who received 20.

"All they’ve done this year is run the ball, an executive said. He had a reputation coming out of Dallas as being pass-happy, so this shows me he can run an offense to fit their strengths, which is cool to see. I’m just concerned about the roster and cap situation. It might look a lot like it did with (Allen)."

The former Eagles offensive coordinator enters a situation with the Saints where they are closer to a rebuild than contending due to their various roster issues. According to Over The Cap, the Saints are projected to be $54 million over the cap this offseason, making it tough for them to upgrade their roster.

Veteran quarterback Derek Carr has the highest cap hit on the team heading into 2025 at $51.4 million. Until the Saints figure out what to do with Carr’s contract, Moore could be in store for a rough start in New Orleans.
