There is no arguing that if Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts suffers any type of serious injury, the team's season is over. While this is true for most franchises, it is especially the case for a Philly offense that is completely built around what its quarterback does best.
With this in mind, the team's opting to part ways with backup Kenny Pickett in the 2025 offseason made sense. Tanner McKee was surprisingly great at the end of the 2024 season and gave Philly enough reason for confidence in moving forward with the cheaper option.
Philly took this a step further, drafting quarterback Kyle McCord as the team's third option. This shake-up leaves one current Eagle clearly on the way out after the Eagles' attempts to add cheaper options to the position.
The Eagles Will Likely Cut Struggling QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson
Dorian Thompson-Robinson was added to the Eagles' roster in the early offseason trade of Pickett. DTR made headlines as a rookie preseason standout in Cleveland, and he even started three games for the Browns during his inaugural NFL campaign, but his year was cut short due to injury.
The quarterback again earned playing time at the end of the last season with Cleveland. After benching Jameis Winston, the franchise attempted to see if they had anything in the young project quarterback. The results quickly had Browns fans ready for Winston to rejoin the lineup in what was a short starting tenure.
Thompson-Robinson's ceiling in this league is as a team's third option at the position. However, the Eagles aren't moving off McKee after his impressive 2024 debut, and the team just invested a draft pick in a project quarterback as the team's QB3. It is impossible to see a path to Thompson-Robinson remaining on the team's roster.
While this isn't to say the quarterback's career won't continue, it won't be with the Eagles. With Hurts, McKee, and McCord locking the first three positions down on the Philly depth chart, there isn't going to be room for the team to carry a fourth option.
This doesn't come as a surprise with Philly's goal always being to part ways with Pickett and add a draft pick. Taking on the contract of the backup quarterback was simply insurance in case a better third option didn't fall the team's way.
This obviously isn't the case with McCord already becoming one of the more interesting stories of the Eagles' offseason. A story that promises Thompson-Robinson's time with Philadelphia is quickly coming to an end.
