The Philadelphia Eagles have thrown some money around in recent seasons, but the real reason for their success is finding gems on the open market.

The Eagles found gold one year ago when they moved embattled tackle Mekhi Becton to guard. Philadelphia is also hoping they found a steal based on wide receiver Terrace Marshall’s early performance at training camp. But as Eagles fans know, not all pickups are created equal, and shopping in the bargain bin has its share of lemons.

As the Eagles grind through the second week of camp, there’s one reclamation project already skating on thin ice, and the bottom could drop out before he even plays a snap for Philadelphia.

Kenyon Green’s Eagles’ Career Could Be Over Before it Begins

The Eagles took a risk when they acquired Kenyon Green in a trade with the Houston Texans last March. A former first-round pick in the 2022 draft, Green hadn’t found his footing in Houston, posting a Pro Football Focus grade under 40 in each of his two healthy seasons in 2022 and 2024. But based on the work Jeff Stoutland had done with Becton a year ago, you could talk him into reviving his career in Philadelphia.

But when the Eagles kicked off training camp, Green was already on the roster bubble. A knee injury kept Green from practicing in the opening week of camp, and things haven’t gone well since, as the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Olivia Reiner left Green off of her 53-man roster projection published on July 31.

“It seems premature to give Green a roster spot, since the guard missed the first two practices of training camp because of a knee injury and was a limited participant in the next two,” Reiner wrote. “For now [Trevor Keegan] has the edge because of his burgeoning positional versatility at guard and center. [Kendall Lamm] could be the next swing tackle, but he could be a practice squad candidate, too, if Green emerges. [Cameron Williams], the sixth-rounder out of Texas, is a developmental tackle worth keeping around, but potentially not on the 53-man roster.”

While there’s still time for Green to earn a roster spot, thoughts of him taking a starting job are already dwindling. The chances of him even becoming a reserve are decreasing as well, with a real possibility he could be cut by the start of the season.

It’s not a promising development, considering Philadelphia sent C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Houston in the deal. But if Green can’t get it together, his Eagles tenure could be over before it even begins.
