After lifting the Lombardi Trophy last season, the Philadelphia Eagles saw a slew of key veterans get poached in free agency. Such is the cost of success in the NFL, as the Super Bowl winners had to see Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, and Mekhi Becton sign elsewhere in free agency, and Bryce Huff and CJ Gardner-Johnson traded.
These financially motivated moves could potentially hurt Philadelphia next season, but the Eagles' front office will hope that some of their new additions will make up for these losses.
Among those additions is Kenyon Green, who was acquired from the Houston Texans in the Gardner-Johnson trade. The Eagles are hoping that Stoutland University will be able to get more out of Green, similar to how they did with Becton last season.
So far, that has not been the case and Green is already looking like an overpaid addition.
Kenyon Green Is Already an Overpaid Addition for the Eagles
With Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Lane Johnson, and Cam Jurgens' spots all set on the offensive line, the Eagles need to find a fifth starter. Green, along with Tyler Steen and Matt Pryor, is a candidate to start at right guard. Having said that, reporting out of OTAs suggests that the former first-round pick is behind Steen in the pecking order.
For a player whom the Eagles gave up an important starter and are paying $1,380,465 in guaranteed salary, that is disappointing.
For fans who have been following Green's journey out of Texas A&M and into the NFL, this development isn't particularly surprising. The former 15th-overall pick missed the entire 2023 campaign with a shoulder injury, but in the other two seasons he was healthy for, he received offensive grades of 38.6 or worse on Pro Football Focus. Each performance ranked among the worst grades in the NFL, earning him a reputation as a bust.
$1.38 million is not much in today's league, but it is significantly higher than a veteran's minimum or a rookie drafted in the mid rounds. So far, it's not looking like Green will be able to provide value at that level, making him a negative contract.
Eagles fans will have to hope that he turns things around in training camp.
