The Philadelphia Eagles had a number of notable departures this offseason. Some were more understandable than others, as players like Milton Williams and Josh Sweat received lucrative deals that the Eagles couldn't have matched. Starting safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson's departure, however, was a bit of a head-scratcher, considering that the Eagles only received Kenyon Green and a fifth-round pick in the trade with the Texans.
To make matters worse, Green isn't off to a great start in Philadelphia. After struggling in his first two seasons in the NFL, the former first-round pick hasn't been able to change his fortunes with the Eagles so far. Delaware News Journal's Martin Frank named Green among the Eagles "who need to step up in camp".
Kenyon Green Not Looking Like a Starter So Far in Philadelphia
While it is important to note that the Eagles are not in pads yet, Frank highlighted that Green was getting work with the third team at left guard during OTAs. For a player who was added to be a starter on the offensive line, that is not a great start.
Throughout the years, the Eagles have relied on Jeff Stoutland to develop offensive linemen who have struggled on their previous teams. The Stoutland University has turned plenty of offensive linemen into solid contributors for the Eagles. That is perhaps why GM Howie Roseman feels so comfortable bringing in underwhelming players in the position, hoping to turn them into starters.
The problem with this approach, in this case, however, the Eagles gave up a very valuable player in CJGJ to acquire Green. Throughout his Texans tenure, Green was one of the worst guards in the league per Pro Football Focus. That is why this start from him is particularly concerning.
The Eagles were hoping for Green to step up and replace Mekhi Becton at right guard. So far, it doesn't look like that will be happening, making the offseason addition of Green a disappointment.
