The Philadelphia Eagles made their first personnel moves of the offseason when they let go of several practice squad players on Tuesday. One of those players was quarterback Kyle McCord, who spent the entire year on Philadelphia’s practice squad and likely saw Tuesday’s decision as an effective end to his time with the Eagles.

The Eagles didn’t bat an eye letting McCord walk with Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee ahead of him on the depth chart. But what they didn’t see coming was a quick rebound as McCord signed a futures contract with the Green Bay Packers according to The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.

Kyle McCord Has a Second Chance with the Green Bay Packers

It’s understandable if fans don’t feel much with the news of McCord landing somewhere else. A sixth-round pick by the Eagles in the 2025 draft, McCord came to Philadelphia with a strong track record during a collegiate career between Ohio State and Syracuse, but couldn’t acclimate to the NFL during the preseason.

According to Pro Football Focus, McCord completed 24-of-56 passes (42.9%) for 191 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions during the Eagles’ three preseason games. The good news was that Dorian Thompson-Robinson didn’t play well enough to take the job from McCord, but he didn’t win the job anyway as the Eagles acquired Sam Howell in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings.

McCord was fortunate enough to be on the Eagles practice squad for his entire rookie season, but he never was elevated for a regular season game and didn’t make enough progress in the Eagles’ eyes to warrant a roster spot heading into the offseason.

While his time in Philadelphia is over, McCord could have a new opportunity in Green Bay. The Packers are expected to lose current backup Malik Willis in free agency. While Desmond Ridder is under contract for the 2026 season, his $1.14 million salary is non-guaranteed, meaning he’ll likely have to earn that spot during training camp.

This puts McCord in a similar position he was last summer with the Eagles. But with head coach Matt LaFleur already reviving Willis’s career after a failed stint with the Tennessee Titans, there’s a world where McCord learns from his mistakes, beats out Ridder and becomes the backup in Green Bay.

With Hurts and McKee locked in, it wouldn’t be too big of a deal for the Eagles going into next season. But it also could be a wasted draft pick and a missed opportunity that could have Howie Roseman kicking himself if McCord gets his career back on track.
