The Philadelphia Eagles are already more than set at the quarterback spot. However, you can never have too much depth at the most important position in all sports.

That's why, despite having three quarterbacks on their roster, one of whom just won Super Bowl MVP last season, they brought back one of the signal-callers they just parted ways with.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, they signed Syracuse star Kyle McCord to their practice squad after he failed to land with another team.

The Eagles Weren't Sold on Kyle McCord

The Eagles' decision to part ways with McCord wasn't much of a surprise. They already had a solid backup in Tanner McKee, and the writing was on the wall when they traded for former Washington Commanders Sam Howell.

Howell arrived in the City of Brotherly Love after McKee suffered a thumb injury, but according to Eagles insider Brandon Lee Gowfton, the Eagles were already gearing up to move on from McCord.

"Howie Roseman says the Eagles would've made the Sam Howell trade even if Tanner McKee wasn't injured," he wrote on X.

The Eagles took McCord with the No. 181 pick. He was their seventh selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, and he joined a crowded quarterback room that also featured Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who failed to make the cut as well.

A New Jersey native, the former Ohio State and Syracuse star led the FBS and set an ACC record with 4,779 passing yards in his final season in college. He's 22 years old, so there's still a chance that he will turn out to be good, although he has always been projected to be a backup.

Whatever the case, this will continue to be Jalen Hurts' team for the foreseeable future, but we've seen promising seasons go to waste because of a lack of a competent backup, so it makes sense that the defending Super Bowl champions want to have multiple insurance policies.
