The Philadelphia Phillies remain behind a New York Mets team that has set the pace in the National League East. While the Braves have floundered, the Phillies have slowly made up ground on the division leaders. However, the Philly lineup isn't without its fair share of concerns, including a slow start by Bryce Harper. With this in mind, the Phillies should be looking at potential lineup upgrades that help the team regain control of the division.
One potential fit could be a familiar face for the Phillies in current Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins. After suffering a brutal injury ahead of the 2023 season, the infielder bounced back last season, offering solid power numbers while taking a slight step back in average. However, this season Hoskins has been closer to his career norms and appears to be fully back to the player he was prior to the 2023 injury.
Rhys Hosking Reuniting With the Phillies is a Deal That Makes Sense for Both Sides
Hoskins has one year left on his current contract, which is a mutual team/player option. It is worth $18 million if exercised, making the potential rental all the more attractive for the Phillies. Having that ability to platoon Hoskins in the lineup makes the team far deeper. The only potential concern is if Hoskins would accept a decreased role to return to a true contender.
The Brewers have taken a clear step back this season, currently sitting fourth within their own division. Hoskins coming back to Philly is possible when you consider the likelihood of the Brewers opting to sell off veteran contracts. The only caveat to this potential fit is that the Phillies would prefer to spend those assets on finding an outfield upgrade that would start every day.
It would be an understandable focus; however, adding Hoskins doesn't prevent the Phillies from going ahead with this move as well. With the Mets taking a step back over the last week and the Braves continuing to deal with injuries, now is the team's chance to make moves and continue to hold control of their division. Sitting back and being content with the status quo isn't on brand for a team that continues to have a clear World Series window.
Going after Hoskins and a potential outfield upgrade is the type of aggressive move that will push Philly apart from the pack. It is moves that are deserved for a dedicated fanbase that has every reason to believe this could finally be their season.
