The Philadelphia Eagles will officially begin their preseason when they welcome the Cincinnati Bengals to Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday night. It's the Eagles' first game since defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59, and all eyes are on head coach Nick Sirianni & Co. to see if they can pick up from where they left off.

As the Eagles prepare for another gruelling campaign, some Philadelphia fans have stayed locked in when it comes to the franchise's former players. On one hand, some ex-Eagles are landing last-minute opportunities left and right before the 2025 campaign begins.

On the other hand, other former Philadelphia players are struggling to land opportunities, including a quarterback who's still unemployed to begin August.

Former Eagles QB Nate Sudfeld is Still Unemployed Before Preseason Opener

It's the first week of the NFL preseason, and former Eagles QB Nate Sudfeld is still without a contract. The ex-Indiana Hoosier was cut from the Detroit Lions ahead of the 2024 campaign, and he's been stewing in free agency ever since then, leaving time to tell how long his unemployed status will last.

Sudfeld arrived in the City of Brotherly Love as a practice squad member during the 2017 season. The Santa Clara, CA native was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 draft and waived by the then-Washington Redskins in just over a year, and was hoping that the Eagles could help turn his career around.

Although he spent parts of four seasons in Philadelphia, Sudfeld never started a game. He made four relief appearances during that stretch, going 25-of-37 (67.6%) in the pocket for 188 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception, and a 77.3 passer rating.

His only memorable moment came when he tallied an INT and a fumble after replacing Jalen Hurts in the 2020 regular-season finale against Washington. The Eagles were down by three points when Sudfeld entered the game, resulting in then-head coach Doug Pederson being accused of trying to intentionally lose the game.

Sudfeld wasn't re-signed after that, kickstarting stints with the San Francisco 49ers and the Lions. He hasn't made an appearance since 2022, though, after suffering an ACL tear during the 2023 preseason, making it unclear if he'll ever take another meaningful NFL snap again.

With how quickly the 2025 season is approaching, time is running out for Sudfeld to find a job. Most teams' QB situations are already set at this point, meaning he'll either need a major injury or a signal-caller's implosion to land an opportunity, even if it's only on a practice squad.

If he's unsigned by Week 1, chances are Eagles fans likely won't see Sudfeld on an NFL roster again.
