With only one preseason game left and only two weeks before the start of the 2025 NFL season, fans can expect a ton of transaction news in the coming days. The roster cutdown date is upon us, and there will be a wave of roster cuts, including former Eagles players.

On Tuesday, it was a recent Eagles draft pick who was let go by his team. Former fourth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles, Zech McPhearson, was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars, per NFL insider Aaron Wilson.

Former Eagles CB Zech McPhearson Is Now a Free Agent

McPhearson's release comes on the heels of his landing on the injured reserve list after Jacksonville's first preseason game. After logging 21 snaps in the Jags' preseason opener, McPhearson was placed on the IR with an undisclosed injury. A week into his time on the IR list, McPhearson and the Jaguars reached an injury settlement that will allow him to sign elsewhere as a free agent.

The 27-year-old would obviously need to pass a physical to sign with a new team, but this presents an opportunity for the former Texas Tech star to land a roster or a practice squad spot before the season.

Despite spending the 2024 season on the practice squad in Jacksonville, McPhearson hadn't made an appearance there. The season prior with the Eagles, McPhearson had suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a preseason game against the Browns and missed the entire campaign. This means that McPhearson hasn't suited up in an NFL game since the 2022 season, when he played every game for the Eagles.

In 33 games in Philadelphia, McPhearson registered 30 tackles, one sack, and two pass breakups, while allowing a 57.9% completion rate when targeted. He has been fine as a depth piece when healthy and available, but a team would ideally like to see that before committing resources. Therefore, it sounds more plausible that McPhearson would begin the 2025 campaign on a practice squad.
