The Philadelphia Eagles have already made changes to the offensive staff to begin their offseason, pushing Kevin Patullo out of the offensive coordinator role. This doesn't come as a surprise after Philly's inept offensive planning defined a season full of frustrations, especially in contrast to an incredibly-coached Vic Fangio defense. With this in mind, it doesn't come as a surprise that fans are looking deeper than Patullo at making meaningful changes to the coaching staff.
And now that the page is turned on Patullo, wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead might be feeling the heat.
"The Eagles should fire Aaron Morehead — the receiver play was hot garbage relative to their talent level. Many bouts of low effort, terrible blocking, poor route detail, penalties, and drops," NFL Stat OASIS' @EaglesXsandOs wrote on Tuesday. While a coach cannot control effort, it is literally his job description to find motivation for the players to execute at a high level.
Another fan pointed out that the likely reason Moorehead hasn't been catching heat is due to the talent at the position. While this is true, it is also important to point out the failure of Jahan Dotson and the never-ending drama around star receiver A.J. Brown. A great coach is able to change both of these failures, or at least help the Eagles navigate the situation a bit better than they have over the last year.
WRs Coach Aaron Moorehead Is Now on the Hot Seat After Eagles Fire Kevin Patullo
Calling for anyone's job is never a great feeling, but the reality of a business that is defined by winning. This is an incredibly talented Philadelphia roster that was just jettisoned in the first round by a team playing practice-squad linebackers, while the Philly defense created multiple turnovers, and the San Francisco 49ers lost star tight end George Kittle for the season within the game. All of this makes it clear that the status quo isn't good enough.
Moorehead could easily fall under this despite being with the franchise since the 2020 season. As great as the Eagles have been at times, there is no hiding from this season's level of failure. Things have gone so poorly at the position that there is zero interest in a return for Dotson, who is slated to hit free agency. Brown's uncertain future with the team only adds to the situation.
On top of that, Brown (1,003) and DeVonta Smith (1,008) were the only Eagles WRs who finished with more than 300 yards this season. Dotson was third at 262, while all of the other Philly wideouts tallied 92 or fewer. That's simply unacceptable.
In other words, it's no surprise that Moorehead's job security is a hot topic after the Eagles' postseason exit. There is no ignoring how dire the team's WR situation is, giving the Eagles every reason to explore parting ways with Moorehead and any other coaches who are holding Philadelphia back.
