Throughout most of the 2025 regular season, the CB2 position has been a topic of conversation revolving around the Philadelphia Eagles.
Adoree’ Jackson began the season as the starter opposite Quinyon Mitchell with a mixed bag of results. Jackson also got hurt in September, opening the door for Kelee Ringo to get a starting opportunity, which did not go well.
Jakorian Bennett, whom the Eagles acquired in August, didn’t emerge as a factor in the CB2 convo, as he was injured as well. Thankfully, for the Eagles, the veteran has brought stability to the CB2 role, and to his credit, has played well for several weeks.
However, Jackson is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and will be 31 in 2026. The Eagles are better off trying to find a younger option in free agency or the draft. If they go the first route, Philadelphia could set its sights on former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs.
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys released Diggs after six seasons with the club. The veteran defender will be exposed to waivers, allowing the other 31 teams across the NFL to put in a claim. But if Diggs goes unclaimed, he’ll become a free agent.
Trevon Diggs' Release May Tempt Eagles with Uncertain Future at CB
Based on the Eagles’ current cornerback situation, they do not need to go after Diggs. But a few months from now, when free agency begins, that’s a different story.
When healthy, Diggs is a Pro Bowl cornerback with a first-team All-Pro on his resume. He has struggled to stay healthy over the last three years, playing in 21 out of a possible 51 games.
This season, the veteran cornerback has played in eight games (six starts) due to an issue with his right knee and a concussion he sustained at home while trying to install a television mount.
When he was on the field this season, the 27-year-old defender was a liability as opposing QBs went right after him. Diggs had an ugly 157.2 pass rating allowed when targeted and gave up four touchdowns.
He also averaged 15.9 yards per reception allowed, which is the second-highest in his career. It was truly a season to forget for Diggs. That said, a place like Philadelphia could get him back on track.
Diggs wouldn’t be the CB1, as Quinyon Mitchell occupies that role. Diggs would have Cooper DeJean in the slot next to him. A Mitchell-Diggs-DeJean trio at cornerback would be one of the best on paper.
It would also allow the former two-time Pro Bowler to face his former team, the Cowboys, twice a year, giving him a chance for revenge.
We’ve already seen the Eagles take a shot on Jackson and trade for Jaire Alexander, so clearly, they aren’t afraid to take a risk.
However, money, aka Diggs’ potential contract, could be a factor for the Eagles, who will need to pay Jaelen Phillips, who is scheduled to be a free agent. Then there’s Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter, who are due for big-time extensions.
That said, if Diggs is willing to take a discount to recoup his value on a Super Bowl-contending defense, then the Eagles might be the best spot for him.
