The Philadelphia Eagles were handed some unfortunate injury news earlier this week regarding three-time Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson. It was reported that Dickerson would undergo a “minor procedure” on his right meniscus, and the goal is for the veteran to be back on the field for Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys on September 4.

With Dickerson out for at least the remainder of the preseason, fans wondered what the team would do at left guard. Would they move Tyler Steen over from right to left guard? And then put Matt Pryor at right guard?

Or would the Eagles just go with the next man-up mentality, which would be Brett Toth? Well, to answer that question, the Eagles rolled with Toth at left guard for the first joint practice against the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday.

Eagles Backup LG Brett Toth Not Pleased with His Performance in Joint Practice

For Toth, who has two starts on his NFL resume (one with Philly), this is a prime opportunity for him to show the Eagles can be depended on if they need the veteran.

However, the 28-year-old offensive lineman gave a harsh assessment of his performance with the first-team to Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports.

"I got beat, dumb mistakes. There are a lot of plays in football that you’re going to be beat on...These are generational athletes that you go against on a daily basis, so every now and then, they’re going to win a rep with a great move. But it’s the mistakes that you do to yourself to give them an easy win that you can’t have.

This game is too hard to have any sort of mistake, whether it’s technique-based, mental based. It’s unacceptable for us."

As we can see, the veteran lineman was quite hard on himself. Toth pointed out that he got beaten, which happens. However, he also mentioned that those mistakes, whether it's through your technique or mental aspect, can lead to the other side getting those wins.

Since he’s not a starter and was predominantly on the practice squad last year, Toth clearly understands how important these reps are.

Once the regular season begins, it's going to be about game-planning for the week’s opponent, along with practice reps for the first-team guys. With Kenyon Green also nursing an injury, Toth has a good opportunity in front of him.

The good news for the 28-year-old lineman is that it was only one practice. Toth can easily get back on track with the second set of joint practices and in Saturday’s preseason game against the Browns.
