After lifting the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the 2024 season, the Philadelphia Eagles had to go through a significant transformation. They lost key free agents like Milton Williams and Josh Sweat and moved on from CJ Gardner-Johnson. The team will almost certainly look very different from it did last season on both ends of the field.

At the same time, GM Howie Roseman has been making savvy moves to set the Eagles up for the future. He has targeted underrated players like Adoree' Jackson, Azeez Ojulari, and Joshua Uche and signed them to team-friendly deals. As Eagles insider Eliot Shorr-Parks noted on Friday, the average cap hits of their ten free agent signings come to $1.3 million.

Eagles Must Extend Cam Jurgens This Offseason

This means that the Eagles still have around $22 million in cap space and some financial flexibility going forward.

Philadelphia can go in many different directions with this additional spending power. What Roseman and the front office have consistently prioritized, however, is retaining their own players. Instead of targeting an external free agent, one thing the Eagles can do is re-sign an extension-eligible contributor to a long-term deal.

The first name that comes to mind is Cam Jurgens. The offensive lineman who took over as the starting center after Jason Kelce's retirement last season is entering the final year of his rookie deal. Jurgens performed at a solid starting center level and made the Pro Bowl in 2024 and is only 25 years old. With one more season under his belt at center, the former second-round pick can certainly reach another level over the next couple of years.

According to Pro Football Focus, Jurgens was the 14th-best center in the league last season. Considering his untapped potential and age, he will certainly have to get paid in the top ten of his position. This will put him around a $10 million annual average salary, similar to Ryan Kelly of the Vikings, Erik McCoy of the Saints, and Tyler Biadasz of the Commanders.

Extending one of your own players is not the sexiest thing a front office can do, but it has certainly served the Eagles well during the Roseman era. The smart offseason spending will once again allow the Eagles to retain a key starter like Jurgens.
