The Philadelphia Eagles appeared to foreshadow the exit of A.J. Brown with the decision to take receiver Makai Lemon with the team's first-round selection. It has been consistently rumored that Brown was unhappy with the franchise and would be dealt at some point in the 2026 offseason. This appears all but confirmed with the addition of not only Lemon, but also the signing of Hollywood Brown in free agency. This shouldn't be the team's final move at the position with veteran Keenan Allen remaining a clear fit in free agency.
As irritating of a presence as Brown has been when it comes to the handling of the media, there is no denying the elite talent. Lemon isn't going to step in as a rookie and be capable of replacing what Brown can do in the Philadelphia lineup. While there will be more effort and willingness to embrace his role, the Eagles need to continue to improve the position.
It is going to be by committee that Brown is replaced, and that is why signing Allen makes perfect sense as a cap to the Philly offseason. Allen remains a productive option even as he ages, offering 777 receiving yards and four touchdowns with the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2025 season.
This would give the Eagles a great group of options with DeVonta Smith, Allen, Brown, and Lemon. Jalen Hurts is at his absolute best when handed a complete cast and isn't dealing with pressure to force-feed a specific player the football.
Eagles Should Continue to Move on from A.J. Brown by Signing Free Agent Keenan Allen
Allen has spent the previous two seasons with the Chargers and the Chicago Bears in this same type of role. With both teams, the pass catcher had more than 700 receiving yards and emerged as a security blanket on key downs. It gives Hurts a much-needed complete group of receivers that all have the reputation of being team players and willing to play any role.
Brown appears to be on the move, no matter whether another addition is coming or not. The Eagles tipped their hand the moment they spent a first-round pick on the position. It makes it clear you're looking to the future and view Smith and Lemon as the new pairing that will lead the Philly offense.
Brown's time in Philadelphia is dwindling, while the contributions of Dallas Goedert at tight end obviously factored in as well. Adding Allen to this group gives you depth to survive any potential injuries and a veteran for Lemon to lean on as he learns to adjust to the next level. No question, the potential signing makes far too much sense for Philadelphia not to explore in the next weeks of the offseason.
