It is hard not to look at the Philadelphia Eagles' first-round selection of Makai Lemon and believe it means anything other than confirmation of A.J. Brown's upcoming exit. The pass catcher has consistently been a source of offseason rumors, with pundits pointing to the two sides heading for divorce. Selecting Lemon allows the Eagles the chance to make the move and still have viable hopes of meaningful contention.

Lemon completes the Philadelphia offense by giving the franchise a well-rounded group of weapons, even if Brown is dealt, as expected, in the upcoming weeks. It seems this is the right decision to make, with there being a clear argument that it is addition by subtraction. Brown is a supremely talented receiver who has proven to be incredibly selfish, no matter the stage or what the Eagles are playing for.

Turning on the tape, it is easy to see the receiver's effort coincide with how often the Philly offense targeted the receiver. This isn't the type of trait the Eagles can continue to put up with, given the way Jalen Hurts plays quarterback and the clear need to embrace an identity of doing whatever it takes to win each Sunday.

Selecting Lemon pushes you in this direction and seals the exit of Brown, who has been pushing his way out over the past two seasons. Even during Philadelphia's 2024 Super Bowl run, the receiver was a source of contention and distraction for the Eagles.

Eagles' First-Round Decision Makes it Clear that A.J. Brown's Exit is Inevitable

This isn't to understate Brown's talent, but rather to amplify the reasons why the Eagles would select Lemon and what it means moving forward. You've already signed veteran Hollywood Brown in free agency, with the pass catcher likely taking on the third receiver role. This leaves Lemon as the second option, with DeVonta Smith becoming the team's primary receiver.

For the Eagles, parting ways with the receiver gives you the chance to become an unselfish offense, focused on adjusting a game plan each week based on your expected advantage. It was clear at the end of the 2025 season that this wasn't Philly's goal with Brown needing to be force-fed the football, not to become a detriment to the team.

With this in mind, there was already the expectation heading into the draft that Brown was on borrowed time on the Philadelphia roster. The Eagles' decision to not only draft Lemon but trade up for him only speeds up a decision that already needed to be made to minimize distractions. Lemon is a willing blocker who will embrace any role the team asks. This is a breath of fresh air and allows the team to turn the page on Brown, moving to a better version of the Philly offense.
