The offensive coordinator search for the Philadelphia Eagles has not gone smoothly so far, most recently after the Buffalo Bills promoted Joe Brady to be their next head coach, and Brian Daboll is set to be the next OC of the Tennessee Titans.

Amid all the misses at the position thus far, former quarterback and current Green Bay Packers QBs coach Sean Mannion has emerged as a potential OC candidate despite having no experience in the position. Considering Mannion would be new to calling plays and could use some help there, bringing in someone like former Chicago Bears HC Matt Nagy or recently fired Denver Broncos OC Joe Lombardi in a supporting role could be wise.

Now that Nagy is looking for a new position after he and the Kansas City Chiefs parted ways, he, too, is in the running for the Eagles' OC job. However, with Mannion as the OC and a veteran playcaller in Nagy on the staff, that is something most can get behind. SportsRadio 94WIP's Eliot Shorr-Parks believes Mannion is the new favorite for the position while cautioning that "I don't think he is the man for the job" due to the experienced roster he would be inheriting as a first-time OC.

Hiring Just Sean Mannion Would Likely Cause Same Problems for Eagles

The 33-year-old Mannion has previously served as an offensive assistant and QBs coach in Green Bay, but the lack of experience calling plays is something Eagles fans are all too familiar with. Two of their OCs under HC Nick Sirianni, Brian Johnson and Kevin Patullo, had no experience calling plays and were both quickly ousted from the position. Shane Steichen and Kellen Moore, the other two OCs for Sirianni, were excellent play-callers and are now the HCs of the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints, respectively.

If Mannion is in consideration for the OC position, there is proof that success can be had in Philadelphia, but it may not come without the right pieces around him. While the Chiefs only got worse on offense during Nagy's tenure, going from ninth in total yards in 2023 to 24th in total offense during the 2025 season, he called plays while he was the HC with the Chicago Bears from 2018 to 2021, which is the type of experience that Mannion does not have.

Lombardi spent three seasons as the Broncos OC, improving the offense from 26th in 2023 to 10th this season, even though it never found a rhythm to support its stout defense. Still, the experience, either as a head coach and OC in Nagy's case, or an OC for Lombardi, is why the two would be worth considering for a spot on the coaching staff, even if Mannion gets the OC position when everything plays out.

It has been difficult for any coordinator to fully reap the rewards of having Jalen Hurts under center, something Patullo also was a victim of. As more OC positions are filled, including former Miami Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel's new gig with the Los Angeles Chargers, the decision to let Patullo go may be one the Eagles could regret.

However, this situation ends, the Eagles are still the defending Super Bowl champions and have a roster more than capable of getting back there. With that said, Sirianni alone is not enough, and it may be a repeat of the same situation with Patullo and Johnson if Mannion gets the nod and does not have someone with more experience in a supporting role.
