Eagles Should Bench Struggling Receiver for Super Bowl

If the Philadelphia Eagles want to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59, HC Nick Sirianni must consider benching this underperforming playmaker.

Super Bowl 59 is just over the horizon as the Philadelphia Eagles prepare for another pivotal showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs. Andy Reid & Co. are the defending back-to-back champions for a reason, meaning Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni cannot afford to have anything but his best lineup on the field come Sunday.

Needless to say, Sirianni has some tough decisions to make in the coming days. Although he likely has a good idea of who is going to play in New Orleans this weekend, the Eagles bench boss should consider benching one struggling wideout against the Chiefs.

Eagles Super Bowl News: Sirriani Must Bench Jahan Dotson vs Chiefs

While missing out on the Super Bowl wouldn't be fun, Eagles wide receiver Jahan Dotson deserves to ride the pine on Sunday. The former 2022 first-round selection has been nothing but inconsistent since he was acquired from the rival Commanders in a 2024 offseason trade that saw three draft picks sent back to Washington.

But after back-to-back 500-yard campaigns, Dotson couldn't even be half that player in his debut seasons with the Eagles.

Despite suiting up in all 17 games, the ex-Penn State playmaker only managed to muster 216 receiving yards (without a touchdown) on 19 receptions. He finished the year among Pro Football Focus' worst-rated WRs in terms of receiving (53.8, 119th) and overall offense (53.7, 124th).

Unfortunately, Dotson's lackluster performance has bled into the postseason. The 5-foot-11 receiver hasn't done anything aside from an 11-yard TD grab against the Green Bay Packers on Wild Card Weekend, finishing the last two games without a reception or target despite playing 78 offensive snaps across those performances.

No matter how you look at it, there isn't a good reason to have Dotson suit up in Super Bowl 59. He's finished 14 of his last 15 games with one or zero catches, meaning the Chiefs know he won't be a factor in the offensive game. The last thing Philadelphia needs is for the first-round bust to cost the team a victory on football's biggest stage.

At the end of the day, benching Dotson would be addition by subtraction. The Eagles know how to win when he isn't involved and are better off using his spot on a practice squad WR (Danny Grey, Kyle Philips, etc.) or an entirely different position altogether.

We'll know more about Dotson's Super Bowl outlook as the week progresses. In the meantime, the Eagles are currently projected as 1.5-point underdogs to the Chiefs in NOLA, per DraftKings Sportsbook.
