Much of the conversation surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off a dominant performance in the playoffs en route to a Super Bowl, has been about what may happen with tight end Dallas Goedert.
The veteran pass-catcher has been one of the most consistent options for quarterback Jalen Hurts during this run, yet his future was up in the air based on his injury history and theoretically declining production as he ages. That said, he's obviously still a valuable member of the offense and has a ton of value.
Philadelphia recognizes that and just adjusted his contract to ensure he sticks with the Eagles for at least one more season. However, the franchise cost Goedert millions with the recently announced restructure.
Eagles Announce Contract Restructure With Dallas Goedert That'll Cost Him Millions
In a report from Field Yates of ESPN, the Eagles restructured their contract with Dallas Goedert in order to keep him in Philadelphia for 2025.
Previously, Goedert was set to make $14 million. Now, he'll make $10 million in cash with an opportunity to earn an additional $1 million in incentives. That's a theoretical loss for the tight end, yet it saves him from the probable possibility of being released outright in order to save money. Ultimately, this is a win for both sides, but it still has to sting knowing you'll lose potentially $4 million in one calendar year.
During the 2024 campaign, Goedert caught 42 passes for 496 yards and two TDs. He appeared in only 10 games, and he's missed at least a handful of contests for six years running now. The injury history is the biggest concern, so it makes sense that the Eagles didn't feel comfortable paying him like a top-of-the-market tight end.
Still only 30 years old, Goedert has a lot of years left in this league. Hopefully, he'll stay healthy and prove his worth but at this point, general manager Howie Roseman made the right decision.
