The Philadelphia Eagles are defending Super Bowl champions but their biggest challenge is to avoid one of Howie Roseman’s biggest mistakes from the last time they won a championship.
That was in 2017 when Roseman celebrated winning Super Bowl 52 by locking most of his core players into long-term contracts. The deals proved costly as the team declined and Roseman was left to rebuild just a few years later beginning with the departure of Carson Wentz and the arrival of Jalen Hurts.
When Milton Williams, Josh Sweat and Mekhi Becton left in free agency, it showed that Roseman had learned from his past failures. But it also put a few surprising names on the trading block including Dallas Goedert. While Goedert remains on the roster, his status could be in jeopardy and it allowed a division rival to check in ahead of next week’s NFL Draft.
Giants Called Eagles Amid Dallas Goedert Trade Rumors
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the New York Giants called the Eagles to see if Goedert was available after trade rumors surfaced this offseason. While Raanan said that New York general manager Joe Schoen has “looked into” Goedert, he also said the situation is worth monitoring as the two teams head deeper into the offseason.
“I heard at one point they looked into Dallas Goedert,” Raanan said on Giants After Dark. “He sounds like a guy who is going to get traded at some point in this draft. Now, I am not expecting Dallas Goedert to get traded to the Giants, but the fact that they checked in on it definitely made me scratch my head a little bit. …It’s something they are at least monitoring.”
Jordan Raanan of ESPN revealed earlier tonight on his Instagram live that the Giants have shown interest in Eagles TE Dallas Goedert.

Raanan also added that he doesn’t expect it to be a move that the Giants will make.

The Giants have good reason to be interested in Goedert. One of the league’s top tight ends since coming into the league as a second-round pick in the 2018 draft, the South Dakota State product has caught 349 passes for 4,085 yards and 24 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Eagles. With 2024 fourth-round pick Theo Johnson currently projected as the starter, Goedert could buy time for his development and become a top target for new quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.
But there’s also a chance for the Eagles to fleece the Giants. Goedert is coming off a down year where he had his lowest reception (42) and yardage (496) totals since his rookie season and holds an $11.7 million cap hit entering the final season of a four-year, $57 million extension. With no guaranteed money remaining on his deal, Goedert could be looking for a new one. But at age-29, it could be another instance where Roseman is willing to eat short-term pain for a long-term benefit.
It’s a similar situation to the one the Eagles faced when Zach Ertz was due for an extension in 2021. With Goedert on the roster, the Eagles agreed to trade Ertz, who spent nine seasons in Philadelphia, to the Arizona Cardinals midway through the 2021 season and turned their attention to Goedert’s development.
That gamble paid off in the long run but Philadelphia doesn’t have a ready-made replacement with Grant Calcaterra listed as Goedert’s backup. Perhaps some extra draft capital from the Giants could give Roseman the ammunition he needs to find that player and with Schenn and head coach Brian Daboll fighting for their jobs, a deal with the Giants may not be as far-fetched as it seems.
