The Philadelphia Eagles wrapped up their OTAs and minicamp. Like the rest of the league, they are waiting to reconvene for training camp in July. The offseason workouts thus far gave the Eagles coaching staff a better idea of their depth in certain positions and clarified the pecking order. The training camp will be the last chance for players on the bubble to make their case to be included in the final 53-man roster.
A competition exists in the Eagles' quarterback room. Even though Jalen Hurts and his backup Tanner McKee are set in their roles, whether Philadelphia will bring in a third QB to the active roster and who that player will be remains an open question.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson is Expendable After Kyle McCord's Emergence
When the Eagles traded Kenny Pickett to the Browns and received Dorian Thompson-Robinson in return, the former UCLA star was seen as the frontrunner to land the third-string QB job. His untapped potential made him an intriguing developmental player in Philadelphia. Things, however, haven't gone according to the plan for DTR so far.
All the reporting out of the Eagles offseason suggests that their sixth-round pick, Kyle McCord, has already passed Thompson-Robinson in the depth chart. The rookie out of Syracuse has been an unexpected OTA standout and has been getting third-team reps, according to Eagles insider Martin Frank.
This makes DTR very expendable before training camp. The Eagles will likely consider moving on from him if they can find a trade partner willing to give up anything of value for him. Otherwise, he will almost certainly be one of the roster cuts before the season, since Philadelphia will be more interested in taking a look at McCord for longer.
This is a good problem to have for the Eagles. GM Howie Roseman was smart in taking a chance in another rookie despite having McKee and Thompson-Robinson on the roster. Whether this move will pay off remains to be seen.
